The Macro-Nutrients of Happiness
You can chase either hedonism or happiness, but you'll only grasp one.
Here’s a brilliant clip from a recent Veritas forum talk with Arthur Brooks (Harvard Business/Harvard Kennedy) describing the “macro-nutrients of happiness”:
Enjoyment (not simply pleasure). “‘If it feels good, do it’ is the best advice for ruining your life.”
+
Satisfaction (as a result of struggle). “We’re made to struggle.”
+
Meaning (significance, coherence, and purpose). “Why am I alive? For what would I be willing to die for today?”
The entire 7-minute clip is worth watching and taking notes on. I’m always excited when I see the world’s thought-leaders catching up to the truths found in the Bible.
