The 8 Traps That Steal "Spaciousness"
In order to avoid an interior life that is crowded, cluttered, and choatic, spaciousness must become a mindset.
On the latest episode of the Emotionally Healthy Leaders’ Podcast, Pete Scazzero identifies 8 traps that rob us from “spaciousness”; the interior margins that allow us to move through our days anchored to God’s presence, peace, and purposes for our lives.
This was a powerful episode filled with more insights than a single listen will permit you to absorb. I highly recommend it, especially for high achievers and those in leadership.
I'm learning that a deep, transformative walk with God in the second-half of life necessitates a fundamental re-think of the values and priorities that often lead to progress and success in the first-half.
When we fill our schedules and say “yes” to many things (even many good things!), we begin to lose interior spaciousness. This has far-reaching consequences. We begin to undermine our ability to discern what is right, good, and true. We choke out the life of God within us. Eventually our cramped, cluttered, chaotic souls lose their ability to express faith, hope, and love in a way that truly blesses others.
Which of these traps do you find yourself most often tempted towards?
I’ll go first: While I’ve fallen into all of these traps many times over the years, I still find numbers 1, 3, 7, and 8 to be ones I’m particularly susceptible to.
The Fruit of the Spirit will not take root and grow within us if it is being choked out by busyness, hurry, and a “do more” mindset—even when being done “for God.”
What does it look like for you to create more spaciousness in your life so that you can receive fully from God?
