Some Thoughts on Why Slow Isn’t Stuck
Your growth hasn’t stopped, it just doesn’t look like the kind of progress we’re used to celebrating.
One theme that keeps surfacing in my own life and in conversations with coaching clients is this:
Progress often feels quiet.
It’s tempting to measure our growth by noise, speed, or obvious results. That's a trap I routinely fall into. But spiritual formation doesn’t usually work that way. God’s work in us often unfolds beneath the surface, slowly and subtly, like seeds breaking open underground.
So don’t confuse slow growth with failure.
That’s such an emotionally demanding truth to truly embrace—especially when you’re longing for change or feeling worn down by steady effort with little visible fruit. Whether you’re chasing growth with passion or just trying to keep going through discouragement, the temptation is the same: to assume that if progress isn’t fast or obvious, it must not be real.
But maybe something is happening beneath the surface.
Ask yourself:
Is there some small shift taking root?
A new posture towards someone?
A little more patience?
A fresh desire for God?
Notice it.
Name it.
Give thanks for it.
These quiet signs of growth are grace at work. Don’t overlook them. Don't minimize them. And don’t believe that rushing the process would lead to results faster.
Your growth hasn’t stopped, it just doesn’t look like the kind of progress we’re used to celebrating. God is forming you in ways that may not always be seen but are always significant.
